Brief overview of my career development

In 1975 I joined the Computers in the Curriculum Project at Chelsea College, University of London. This was a national, highly innovative project to develop computer-based learning curricula for teaching science at university and senior high school.

I then moved to the Open University (OU) where I started working on my Ph.D. part-time in 1980 while working full-time for the university. In 1985 I gained my Ph.D. and I was awarded immediate tenure at the Open University, which was an unusual honor.

In 1994 I became Research Professor of Information Systems and Director of the Research Center for People and Systems Interaction at South Bank University in London. In 1996 I moved to the USA and then became Chair of Information Systems at University of Maryland Baltimore County for five and a half years. During this time we more than doubled the number of faculty members, revised our programs, developed a distance Masters program and increased our research productivity considerably.

  1. Research and Scholarship

After completing my Ph.D. in 1985 my research focused on information systems, computer-mediated communication, human-computer interaction, distance education, and online communities. My current research is concerned with the design and management of online communities. I work with communities of practice, health, education, non-profit and knowledge communities and I am about to start work on an NSF-funded project to develop cross-cultural children’s online book communities.

My research addresses questions concerned with sociability and usability in online communities. I focus on three main research areas: (i) knowledge exchange, empathy, trust, and etiquette online; (ii) why and how people participate, or do not participate; and (iii) heuristics and methods for developing, maintaining and evaluating online communities.

Books

Preece, J., Rogers, Y. & Sharp, H. (2002) Interaction Design: Beyond Human-Computer Interaction. New York, NY: John Wiley & Sons. (519 pages).  This co-authored book is the text for teaching human-computer interaction to undergraduate and masters students in many universities. www.id-book.com

Preece, J. (2000) Online Communities: Designing Usability, Supporting Sociability. Chichester, UK: John Wiley & Sons. (439 pages)
This is one of the first comprehensive texts about online communities and it has been well reviewed. www.ifsm.umbc.edu/onlinecommunities. It was the first book to coherently bring together the sociability and usability issues in online community development.

Preece, J., Rogers, Y., Sharp, H., Benyon, D., Holland, S. & Carey, T. (1994) Human-Computer Interaction. Wokingham, UK: Addison-Wesley. (775 pages)
This book was a leading text in HCI until Interaction Design was published in 2002. In the October 1994 issue of the SIGCHI Bulletin, Gary Perlman said in his review: "Preece et al. have done for HCI what Pressman and Sommerville did for software engineering in their widely used textbooks: they have digested the research and practice and presented the material in a pedagogically sound manner. ... it is the first [book] that fits the billing of a good textbook for graduate and undergraduate use." p. 82. Seven years later in a review of the top ten HCI books on Amazon Perlman still rated this book as number 8 with the comment “the first real textbook in HCI - still useful”.
